Chapter 36 Summary: “Tris”

It’s snowing when Tris and the group return to the compound. Tris is unsettled when she sees the contrast between the fringe and the compound. She goes to the dorm looking for Christina and Tobias, and Caleb tells her Tobias is in the genealogy room. He also tells her about the Allegiant attack. Tris goes to the genealogy room and finds Tobias looking at his family tree. She suddenly realizes how torn he is by his hatred of his parents and his desire to feel loved by them. Tris tells Tobias that she forgives him, knowing she’s not perfect, but he’s perfect for her.

Chapter 37 Summary: “Tris”

Tris goes to her first council meeting and sees David in the hall. She notices he looks more pale and tired than before and offers to push his wheelchair. They arrive at the meeting room, and Tris sits next to Zoe along the wall. David begins the meeting and explains that the Allegiant have rebelled against Evelyn. However, if they provoke her, she will release the collection of death serum she has hidden. Because the results would be catastrophic, David proposes they reset all four experiment cities, just as they had done in the past when the cities approached collapse. Tris is angry that they are more worried about their experiment than saving numerous lives and that the Bureau looks at the cities as sources of genetic material.

Chapter 38 Summary: “Tobias”

Cara and Tobias sit in the dorm discussing their experiment from that morning. They used Tris to test their new truth serum; she could still resist it, which surprised Cara. Tris walks into the dorm and tells them about the council meeting and David’s plan to reset Chicago. Tris suggests they reset and reprogram the leaders at the Bureau. Tobias objects, however, saying Tris wants to do to the Bureau what they’re trying to prevent happening to Chicago. Tris responds that the Bureau is lucky she doesn’t kill them.

Chapter 39 Summary: “Tris”

Tris goes to Matthew to learn more about how the memory serum works. He says the serum only targets specific memories, such as someone’s personal history, but doesn’t affect functions like speech or movement. The group decides they must get to the memory serum before the Bureau does, and Tris says she will talk to Nita about the security in the Weapons Lab.

Tobias tells Tris he doesn’t think their plan is the right choice, but Tris says they don’t have time for any other option. Christina rushes in and says Uriah has no brain function, so he will never wake up. The doctors will take him off life support in four days. So, the group decides to send Tobias, Peter, and Christina to Chicago with the help of Amar and George. They will tell Uriah’s family what happened to him and inoculate Uriah’s and Christina’s families against the memory serum.

Christina and Tris sit next to Uriah and comfort each other, reminding themselves that they will always be friends. Tris also tells Christina everything that’s been happening with the council and David’s plan. Tris leaves and visits Nita. She tells Nita they have a new strategy and asks about the Weapons Lab’s security. Nita says David is the only person in the compound who knows the passcode, and if someone enters the lab without the code, the death serum will fill the lab, killing anyone inside. Tris then asks where the Bureau’s explosives are stored, promising Nita her freedom if she cooperates. Nita says Reggie has the explosives.

Chapter 40 Summary: “Tobias”

The group asks Amar to drive them to Chicago, and he agrees. Tobias thinks about how he will tell Zeke about Uriah and asks Cara how she was able to forgive Tris for killing her brother. Cara tells him to confess what he did and not to hide behind excuses.

The group going to Chicago eats dinner together and inoculates themselves against the memory serum in case they cannot leave Chicago in time. Tobias notices Peter only pretends to inject himself. After dinner, Tobias and Christina break off from the rest; Christina is worried that if they stop the Bureau from resetting Chicago, the city will likely destroy itself anyway. She asks Tobias if there’s anything he can do to get his parents to stop fighting since they are the leaders of each side. Tobias realizes he can give one or both of his parents the memory serum and wipe away their hatred. The two decide to split up on the way to the city so Tobias can accomplish this new plan.

Chapters 36-40 Analysis Analysis

Throughout the series, Tobias feels significant tension with his parents and his desire to be loved and valued by them. This tension continues to build as Tobias decides to use memory serum on one or both of his parents. He hopes doing so will stop the animosity between the two and bring peace not just to Tobias but also to Chicago. Ironically, so much of the conflict in the novel stems from Evelyn and Marcus. Their inability to work together and forgive each other causes great pain in their son, and it’s also the core of the conflict in the city. Evelyn leads the factionless, hoping to eradicate the factions, and Marcus now leads the Allegiant, which seeks to destroy Evelyn and the factionless. This complicated relationship seems extreme but symbolizes the harm done within a family and a community when people refuse to work together and forgive others.

In the previous section, Amar gave Tris valuable insight into who Tobias is and how he functions. In this section, her heart softens further when she sees Tobias in the genealogy room, finally realizing how much internal conflict Tobias struggles with and how difficult it is for him. Watching Tobias look at his family tree allows Tris to forgive Tobias for following Nita and enables the couple to strengthen their relationship. The characters finally consummate their relationship and spend the night together, symbolizing their ability to overcome their differences. Tris and Tobias are strong, capable characters, yet both struggle with insecurities and internal conflicts. However, they find strength in one another and can work through these imperfections together.

Although Tris overcomes her conflict with Tobias, she puts herself in another difficult position. Tris understandably wants to stop the Bureau from harming others, yet her plan to stop them is the same as what the Bureau plans to do to Chicago. Her excuse for wanting to reset the Bureau’s leaders against their will is that she doesn’t have time to find another solution. However, Tobias reminds her that resetting the Bureau is no different from the Bureau resetting Chicago. Tris reminds him that the people in Chicago are innocent, but the people at the Bureau are evil for their actions. Tobias disagrees but doesn’t say anything. Tris’s position is difficult; her perspective is logical, yet it is out of character for a young woman who cares about others and is determined to preserve freedom of choice.
