Chapter 25 Summary

After Maali’s death, Natasha’s heroin usage gets worse. Finally, Natasha decides to leave the hospital in December 2003 to escape her addiction. Natasha hopes to travel to the refugee camps and then find some way to escape to a foreign country. Natasha walks all day and ends up in the village of Eldár, where two women tell her that Dokka has beds for refugees. When Natasha arrives at Dokka’s home, Dokka recognizes her as the woman who delivered Havaa and tells her she can stay as long as she wants. At first Natasha is horrified by Dokka’s missing fingers, and she realizes his young daughter must help him out around the house. The next morning, Havaa tells Natasha about her collection of souvenirs from the refugees who have stayed at the house and shows Natasha her scarecrow of Akim in the woods. That evening Akhmed stops by, and Natasha tells him about the hospital. Akhmed asks about the hiring process, and Natasha admits that no one has received a paycheck in years. Akhmed tells Natasha about a field commander he met whose chest was stitched up with dental floss, and Natasha tells Akhmed the sutures were done by Sofia Andreyevna Rabina, or Sonja. Later that night, Natasha gives Havaa the Buckingham Palace Guard nutcracker to add to her collection of souvenirs.

Dokka insists that Natasha stay until a group of refugees pass through so that Natasha can travel with them, but after five days no refugees arrive. Before Natasha leaves, Dokka gives her the Makarov pistol for protection and as a thank-you for delivering Havaa. Natasha walks for several days, camping in the woods at night. One day, Natasha arrives at a checkpoint. The soldiers search her suitcase but not her clothing, where she keeps the pistol hidden against her chest. Finally, a colonel says he will help Natasha pass through the checkpoint. The colonel leads Natasha deep into the woods and attempts to sexually assault her. Natasha shoots the colonel, killing him. Hearing the gunshots, the soldiers run into the woods and kill Natasha with machine guns.

Chapter 26 Summary

At the hospital, Sonja waits for Akhmed but he never arrives. Near the ice machine, Sonja finds the note Akhmed had once sewn into his pants leg with his address. Sonja follows the address and drives to Akhmed’s house in Eldár. The house is dirty and filled with broken furniture. Sonja finds a dead woman in the bedroom and sees the syringe of heroin next to her body. Sonja tidies the house and cleans and dresses the woman. Under the woman’s body, Sonja finds the letters for Havaa and the manila envelope bearing Khassan’s address. One of the letters to Havaa describes how a woman at the hospital named Natasha delivered Havaa. Sonja drives to Khassan’s address and gives Khassan the envelope addressed to him. Sonja tells Khassan that Akhmed has been taken, and Khassan asks about Akhmed’s wife, telling Sonja that her name was Ula. Sonja explains that Ula’s body is still at the house, but she is dead. Back in her car, Sonja notices that two of her letters of safe passage are missing. Sonja puts Havaa’s letters with the remaining ones so she can give the letters to Havaa at the hospital.

Chapter 27 Summary

At 12:15 in the morning, Khassan hears the Feds break into Akhmed’s house and take him. Later that morning Khassan goes into Ramzan’s room and watches him sleep. While Ramzan sleeps, Khassan tells him a story about the village from Khassan’s childhood. In the village, the cobbler’s son had found a way to make liquor, and his drinking caused him to destroy many people’s property. The cobbler offered to mend the shoes of anyone his son had wronged, but he was unable to keep up with the number of people his son had affected. One day the son disappeared. A month later the village elders visited the cobbler and welcomed him back because he had put the good of the society above his own. Khassan explained that the story always ended there, and nobody talked about how the cobbler spent the rest of his life drinking, “alone but for the ghost of his son, whom he pleaded with in unbearable calls that I could hear from the far side of the village” (362).

As Khassan watches Ramzan sleep, he is interrupted by a knock at the door. The woman, whom we understand is Sonja, introduces herself as a friend of Akhmed’s, explains that Akhmed is gone, and gives Khassan the manila envelope addressed to him. After the woman leaves, Khassan goes to Akhmed’s house. Khassan sees that it is cleaned, with Ula’s body dressed and laying on the bed. Back at home, Khassan packs his clothes and takes Ramzan’s pickup truck. The manila envelope from Akhmed contains two letters of safe passage. Khassan isn’t sure where he will go, but he is determined to leave. As Khassan starts to drive, he sees the feral dogs in the rearview mirror. Khassan unlatches the pickup’s tailgate and allows the dogs to jump inside before driving out of the village.

Chapters 25-27 Analysis

These passages are significant because they make connections between various characters in the text. It is revealed that when Natasha left, she passed through Eldár, giving the nutcracker to Havaa and obtaining the Makarov pistol. It is also revealed that Natasha is the one who shot the colonel, the crime that Ramzan later pins on Akhmed, causing the Feds to take him. This information addresses many unanswered questions in the text. Furthermore, this is the moment when Sonja finally visits Akhmed’s village and sees his wife Ula and his friend Khassan. Characters are connected in unexpected ways throughout the novel, but these chapters reveal some of the most significant connections. While the characters initially seem insignificant to each other, they are often linked through their pasts in more important and surprising ways than they realize
